🔧 Little Giant 5-MSP Submersible Utility Pump – 1/6 HP, 1500 GPH, 25-Ft Cord

Compact, continuous-duty submersible pump built for dependable water removal and transfer

📋 Product Overview

The Little Giant 5-MSP (Part No. 505712) is a 1/6 HP Next Generation submersible utility pump manufactured by Little Giant, a division of Franklin Electric. Weighing just 7.4 pounds yet delivering an impressive 1500 gallons per hour at 1 foot of lift, the 5-MSP is a compact powerhouse rated for continuous duty across residential, commercial, and light industrial applications.

This Next Gen model features an oil-free PSC (Permanent Split Capacitor) motor that is environmentally friendly and delivers reliable, quiet performance with thermal overload protection. The rugged epoxy-coated die-cast aluminum housing provides excellent strength and heat dissipation, while the stainless steel motor shaft resists corrosion for extended service life. A removable polypropylene intake screen allows fast cleaning and enables ultra-low pump-down to just 1/8 inch with the screen installed, or an impressive 1/16 inch with the screen removed — significantly reducing cleanup time for water removal tasks.

The 5-MSP includes a generous 25-foot power cord for flexible positioning, a 1-inch FNPT discharge with an included 3/4-inch garden hose adapter, and a built-in carry handle for easy portability. Ideal for draining hot tubs and spas, removing water from basements and crawlspaces, pool cover water removal, hydroponics systems, and general water transfer applications. The 505712 is the Next Gen replacement for the discontinued 505025, 505325, and 505375 models.

🛠️ Installation Requirements

Submersible Installation:

Requirement	Specification
Positioning	Fully submerged in liquid
Minimum Water Depth	Pump-down to 1/8″ with screen; 1/16″ without screen
Operation Type	Manual — must be monitored during use
Discharge	1″ FNPT (upward or to side)
Weight Support	Place on solid, level surface at lowest point of water collection

Installation Notes:

⚠️ This pump is designed for submersible use only. Do not operate above water level or use as an in-line pump.

⚠️ Manual operation — this pump does not include a float switch. The pump must be monitored during operation. Do not allow the pump to run dry, as this will cause motor damage.

⚠️ For reduced flow, use the largest diameter hose possible on the discharge to minimize friction losses and maximize pump performance.

⚠️ Remove the intake screen for ultra-low pump-down to 1/16 inch. Ensure the area is free of debris before removing the screen, as debris can damage the impeller.

⚠️ Maximum liquid temperature is 96°F (30°C) for continuous duty operation. For hot tub draining, allow water to cool below this temperature before pumping.

⚠️ Ensure GFCI protection is in place for all outdoor, pool, spa, and water feature installations per NEC requirements.

⚠️ Do not pump flammable, explosive, or corrosive liquids.

🔄 Maintenance Guide

Routine Maintenance:

Task	Frequency	Notes
Clean intake screen	After each use	Remove screen and rinse debris; reinstall before next use
Inspect discharge connection	Before each use	Ensure fittings are tight and leak-free
Inspect power cord	Before each use	Check for damage, cuts, or exposed wiring
Verify GFCI function	Monthly	Test GFCI outlet or breaker per manufacturer instructions
Clean pump exterior	After each use	Remove sediment and mineral deposits from housing
Verify carry handle integrity	Periodically	Ensure handle is secure for safe transport

Warning Signs — Service or Replace Pump If:

• Motor fails to start or runs sluggishly
• Unusual noise (grinding, rattling, or high-pitched whine)
• Reduced flow rate despite clear intake screen
• Motor trips circuit breaker repeatedly
• Excessive vibration during operation
• Power cord or plug shows visible damage
• Pump overheats during normal operation

Screen Removal for Low Pump-Down:

The polypropylene intake screen can be removed to allow the pump to operate down to 1/16 inch of water depth. To remove, twist or unclip the screen from the pump base (refer to the installation manual for model-specific instructions). Ensure the pumping area is free of debris that could enter the impeller before operating without the screen.

Winterization:

If the pump will be stored in freezing conditions, remove from water and drain completely. Store in a dry location above freezing temperatures. Do not allow water to remain inside the pump housing during freezing conditions.
