💧 Pentair SuperFlo VST Variable Speed Pool Pump | 1.5 HP, 2.2 THP, 115/208-230V | 342002

Cut your pool pump energy costs by up to 80% with Pentair’s whisper-quiet variable speed technology.

📋 Product Overview

The Pentair SuperFlo VST (342002) is a variable speed pool pump built for pool owners who want real energy savings without the complexity. Powered by a 1.5 HP permanent magnet motor rated at 2.2 Total Horsepower (THP), this pump adapts automatically to 115V or 230V power — no expensive rewiring, no electrician callbacks. Just connect and save.

What sets the SuperFlo VST apart is its combination of simplicity and performance. The digital control keypad with three programmable speeds and a built-in 24-hour clock lets you dial in the exact flow your pool needs, running at lower speeds most of the day and ramping up only when needed. The result: dramatically lower electric bills and a pump so quiet you’ll forget it’s running.

Designed as a direct drop-in replacement for the Hayward Super Pump and existing Pentair SuperFlo pumps, the 342002 makes upgrading painless. This is a TradeGrade product from the company that pioneered variable speed pool pump technology.

💰 Usage Costs & Running Expenses

Understanding your running costs is key to appreciating the value of a variable speed pump. Here’s how the SuperFlo VST 342002 stacks up.

📊 Annual Running Cost Calculation

Energy Rate Used: $0.1778 per kWh — U.S. national average residential electricity rate, based on the latest EIA (U.S. Energy Information Administration) data as reported by ChooseEnergy.com, February 2026.

Pentair’s Energy Savings Claim: Up to 80% energy cost reduction compared to a conventional single-speed pump running 12 hours per day at $0.16/kWh in a 20,000-gallon pool. (Source: Pentair official brochure P1-205, 02/2022. Disclaimer: “Actual savings may vary based on local utility rates, pool size, pump run time, pump horsepower, pump RPM, plumbing size and length, pump model, service factor and other hydraulic factors.”)

🏊 Scenario 1: Year-Round Pool (Sunbelt States — FL, TX, AZ, CA)

Running 12 hours/day, 365 days/year.

❌ Typical Single-Speed 1.5 HP Pump (draws approximately 1.5 kW at full speed):

• 1.5 kW × 12 hours × 365 days = 6,570 kWh/year
• 6,570 kWh × $0.1778 = $1,168.15 per year

✅ Pentair SuperFlo VST 342002 (with up to 80% savings per Pentair):

• Estimated annual cost: ~$233.63 per year

💵 Estimated Annual Savings: ~$934.52 📈 Estimated 3-Year Savings: ~$2,803.56 ⏱ Estimated Payback Period: Under 2 years (based on pump price of $1,529.78)

☀ Scenario 2: Seasonal Pool (Northern States — 6-Month Season)

Running 12 hours/day, 180 days/year.

❌ Typical Single-Speed 1.5 HP Pump:

• 1.5 kW × 12 hours × 180 days = 3,240 kWh/year
• 3,240 kWh × $0.1778 = $576.07 per year

✅ Pentair SuperFlo VST 342002 (with up to 80% savings per Pentair):

• Estimated annual cost: ~$115.21 per year

💵 Estimated Annual Savings: ~$460.86 📈 Estimated 5-Year Savings: ~$2,304.30 ⏱ Estimated Payback Period: Approximately 3.3 years

⚡ Scenario 3: Optimized Variable Speed Usage (8 hours low speed + 4 hours medium speed)

This reflects a real-world variable speed usage pattern: running at low RPM for daily circulation (much lower wattage) and ramping up to medium speed for filtration periods.

❌ Single-Speed 1.5 HP Pump at 12 hours/day, 365 days:

• Annual cost: $1,168.15 (calculated above)

✅ SuperFlo VST at variable speeds:

• At low speed (~1,400 RPM), variable speed pumps typically draw a fraction of full-speed power
• Pentair’s own claim of up to 80% savings reflects this variable speed advantage
• Estimated annual cost with optimized scheduling: ~$233–$350 (varies by pool system and plumbing)

💵 Estimated Annual Savings: $818–$935

⚠ Important Notes on Cost Calculations:

• Single-speed pump power draw of ~1.5 kW is a typical industry figure for a 1.5 HP single-speed pool pump. Actual draw varies by manufacturer and model.
• The “up to 80% savings” figure is Pentair’s official claim, sourced from their product brochure. Your actual savings depend on your pool size, plumbing, pump run schedule, and local electricity rates.
• Energy rate of $0.1778/kWh is the U.S. national average. Your state rate may be higher or lower. For example, California averages ~$0.32/kWh (savings would be nearly double), while states like North Dakota average ~$0.12/kWh.

🎯 Real-World Examples & Applications

🏊‍♂ Standard Residential In-Ground Pool (15,000–25,000 Gallons)

The SuperFlo VST 342002 is purpose-built for residential in-ground pools requiring up to 1.5 HP of pump power. Run Speed 2 (1,400 RPM) for 8–10 hours of daily circulation, then kick up to Speed 1 (3,000 RPM) for a few hours of filtration. Performance curves show the pump handles flow rates across typical residential pool plumbing systems at all three preset speeds.

🔄 Replacing an Old Single-Speed Pump

This is where the SuperFlo VST shines brightest. It’s specifically engineered as a drop-in replacement for the Hayward Super Pump and older Pentair SuperFlo single-speed models. Same plumbing footprint (1.5″ socket × 2″ spigot unions), dual-voltage capability — meaning your existing wiring likely works as-is. The upgrade from a single-speed to this variable speed pump is the single most impactful energy-saving improvement most pool owners can make.

🏠 Standard Pump Replacement for Aging Equipment

If your current pump is getting noisy, losing prime, or showing its age, the 342002 is a straightforward swap. The improved mechanical seal and TEFC motor are designed for years of reliable, quiet service. The built-in 24-hour clock means you set it and forget it.

🏢 Small Commercial Pools & HOA Pools

For smaller commercial or community pools, the SuperFlo VST’s combination of RS-485 automation connectivity, programmable schedules, and energy efficiency makes it a smart choice. Integration with Pentair EasyTouch or IntelliCenter systems allows remote monitoring and speed control — ideal for property managers.

🌊 Pools with Water Features

If you run a small waterfall, fountain, or spa spillover, the three-speed flexibility is valuable. Use a lower speed for standard circulation and program a higher speed during times when water features are active. The Quick Clean mode at 3,450 RPM provides maximum flow when needed for vacuuming or after heavy pool use.
