Power Your Pool Smarter — Cut Energy Costs Up to 80% With Whisper-Quiet Variable Speed Technology

📋 Product Overview

The LX SWP 3.5THP Variable Speed Pool Pump delivers professional-grade performance for in-ground swimming pools at a fraction of the operating cost of traditional single-speed pumps. Built with a high-efficiency permanent magnet motor, this pump adjusts its speed from 450 to 3,450 RPM to match your pool’s exact needs — whether you’re running daily filtration, powering water features, or doing a deep clean.

What sets the SWP390-VS apart is its triple certification: Energy Star 3.1, DOE (Department of Energy), and CEC (California Energy Commission) compliant. That means verified energy savings you can count on. With noise levels as low as 42 decibels — quieter than a typical conversation — you can run your pool equipment day or night without disturbing anyone.

Designed for American pool owners who want reliability, efficiency, and simple operation, this pump features programmable scheduling, Pentair automation compatibility, and a large transparent strainer basket for easy maintenance. Stop overpaying to run your pool.

💰 Usage Costs & Running Expenses

One of the biggest advantages of a variable speed pump is the dramatic reduction in operating costs. Here’s exactly what you can expect:

📊 Annual Running Cost Calculation

LX SWP 3.5THP Variable Speed at Typical Operating Speed:

Most pool owners run variable speed pumps at 40–60% speed for daily filtration. At 1,400 RPM (40% speed), the SWP390-VS draws approximately 375 watts.

• Power consumption: 0.375 kW
• Daily usage: 8 hours
• Annual operation: 180 days (typical pool season)
• Total annual hours: 1,440 hours
• Energy rate: $0.18 per kWh (US national average residential rate, EIA/Choose Energy, January 2026)

✅ LX SWP Variable Speed Annual Cost: 0.375 kW × 1,440 hours × $0.18 = $97.20 per year

❌ Compared to a Single-Speed 3HP Pump:

A traditional single-speed 3HP pump runs at full power constantly, typically consuming 2,400–2,700 watts.

• Power consumption: 2.5 kW (average)
• Daily usage: 8 hours
• Annual operation: 180 days
• Total annual hours: 1,440 hours
• Energy rate: $0.18 per kWh

❌ Single-Speed Pump Annual Cost: 2.5 kW × 1,440 hours × $0.18 = $648.00 per year

💵 Your Annual Savings: $550.80

That’s a savings of over 85% on pump operating costs compared to a single-speed pump running the same schedule.

⚡ Why the Massive Difference? It’s physics. The pump affinity law states that when you cut motor speed in half, energy consumption drops to just 1/8th of the original. Running slower doesn’t mean filtering less — it means filtering smarter.

🎯 Real World Examples & Applications

🏊‍♂ Residential In-Ground Pool (15,000–25,000 Gallons)

The SWP390-VS is ideal for medium to large residential pools. Run it at 1,400–1,800 RPM for 8–10 hours daily to achieve proper water turnover while keeping energy costs under $10/month during pool season.

🏊‍♂ Large Residential Pool with Water Features (25,000–40,000 Gallons)

For pools with fountains, waterfalls, or spillover spas, program Speed 3 (2,200 RPM) to power features during the day, then drop to Speed 1 (1,400 RPM) overnight for quiet, efficient filtration.

🔄 Upgrading from an Old Single-Speed Pump

If you’re replacing a 10+ year old single-speed pump, the SWP390-VS will typically pay for itself within 12–18 months through energy savings alone — faster in high-electricity-rate states like California, Connecticut, or Hawaii.

🏢 Small Commercial Applications

Suitable for small commercial pools, community pools, or HOA pools where reliable operation and energy efficiency are priorities. The programmable schedule ensures consistent filtration without manual intervention.

🌊 Pool + Spa Combinations

Use higher speeds when running the spa jets, then automatically switch to low-speed filtration when the spa isn’t in use. The 4-speed programming handles the transitions automatically.

💡 Cost Savings Examples

📍 Scenario 1: Upgrading from an 8-Year-Old Single-Speed Pump

The Situation: Your existing 2HP single-speed pump runs 8 hours daily and costs approximately $45–55/month during summer in electricity.

The Upgrade: Install the LX SWP 3.5THP Variable Speed and program it to run at 1,400 RPM for daily filtration.

• ❌ Old pump monthly cost: ~$50
• ✅ New pump monthly cost: ~$8
• 💰 Monthly savings: $42
• 📈 Annual savings: $252 (6-month season) to $504 (year-round use)
• ⏱ Payback period: 18–36 months

📍 Scenario 2: California Pool Owner (High Electricity Rates)

California’s average residential electricity rate is approximately $0.34/kWh (EIA, 2025) — nearly double the national average.

Variable Speed Pump (1,400 RPM, 8 hrs/day, 180 days): 0.375 kW × 1,440 hrs × $0.34 = $183.60/year

Single-Speed Pump (same schedule): 2.5 kW × 1,440 hrs × $0.34 = $1,224.00/year

💵 California Savings: $1,040.40 per year

📍 Scenario 3: Year-Round Florida Pool Owner

Florida pools often run year-round. With 365 days of operation at 8 hours/day:

Variable Speed Pump: 0.375 kW × 2,920 hrs × $0.18 = $197.10/year

Single-Speed Pump: 2.5 kW × 2,920 hrs × $0.18 = $1,314.00/year

💵 Year-Round Savings: $1,116.90 per year

📈 10-Year Savings: Over $11,000
