Laing E10 Spa Pump 1 Speed 230V 1" Barb 74079

🔌 Laing E10 Spa Circulation Pump — 1/40 HP 230V 1″ Barb | 74079

High-efficiency 230V ECM circulation with 1-inch barb connections for full-size spa plumbing systems

♨️ Product Overview

The Laing E10 (74079) is a 230V, single-speed circulation pump with 1″ barb connections — designed for spas that operate on 230V power and use 1-inch vinyl tubing for their circulation plumbing. This is the 230V, 1″ barb version of the industry-standard Laing E10 series, making it the ideal choice for full-size hot tubs that require both higher voltage and larger plumbing connections than the more common 3/4″ barb models. Powered by the same high-efficiency Electronically Commutated (EC) permanent magnet spherical motor found in all E10 models, the 230V version draws 71 watts at 3,200 RPM while consuming 40% less energy than the SM-909 and SM-1212 induction motor pumps it replaces. The patented sealless, shaftless design uses a magnetically driven open impeller with a high-density ceramic ball bearing and graphite impeller bearing cap — there is no mechanical seal to leak, wear, or replace. Built-in dry run protection via an embedded microprocessor automatically shuts the pump down if no water is detected and retries, while automatic overload protection and soft start further safeguard the motor. Delivering up to 15 GPM with a maximum head of 20 feet and maximum working pressure of 50 PSI, this pump handles the demands of larger spa circulation systems with ease. Operating at less than 40 dB, weighing less than 5 lbs, and featuring an integrated thermoplastic bracket mountable at 4 discharge angles, the 74079 fits even tight equipment bays. Includes a 4-foot power cord and mounting bracket. Used as OEM equipment in Dimension One, Gatsby Spas, Jacuzzi, Saratoga, Sundance, and Santa Barbara Spas.

⚠️ 230V ONLY: This pump operates on 230V power. Do NOT connect to a 115V circuit — this will result in inadequate performance and potential damage. Verify the voltage on your existing pump label before ordering. For 115V spa systems with 1″ barb connections, use the 74069 (115V, 1″ barb) instead.

💡 Choosing Your E10 Variant: All Laing E10 pumps share the same motor design and internals — the only differences are voltage and connection type. The 74079 is the 230V + 1″ barb version. See the E10 family table in the Compatibility section to find the right match for your spa.

🔩 Technical specifications

⚡ Electrical Requirements

115V vs. 230V E10 Motor Comparison

Specification	115V E10	230V E10 (THIS PUMP)
Input Wattage	62W	71W
RPM	3,100	3,200
Flow Rate (Max)	15 GPM	15 GPM
Max Head	20 ft	20 ft

💡 The 230V version runs at slightly higher RPM (3,200 vs 3,100) and draws slightly more wattage (71W vs 62W) than the 115V version, but flow rate and head pressure are the same.

⚠️ CRITICAL: This is a 230V pump ONLY. For 115V spa systems, use the 115V E10 variant that matches your connection type (73989, 74069, or 74009). Always verify voltage on your existing pump label before ordering. Using a 230V pump on 115V will result in poor performance; using a 115V pump on 230V will damage the motor.

⚠️ ELECTRICAL SAFETY: All electrical installations must be performed by a licensed electrician in accordance with the National Electrical Code (NEC) and local building codes. Hot tubs require GFCI (Ground-Fault Circuit Interrupter) protection. A dedicated circuit is required — do not share with other appliances.

This Pump Replaces — SM-909 / SM-1212 230V Series

The Laing E10 74079 replaces all discontinued 230V SM-909 and SM-1212 series pumps with 1″ barb or compatible connections. If your existing pump has an SM-909 or SM-1212 part number and runs on 230V with 1″ barb connections, this is the correct replacement.

Plumbing Compatibility — Connection Type Is Critical

Your Existing Connection	This Pump	Notes
1″ barb	✅ Direct fit	1″ barbed intake and discharge — connects to 1″ ID vinyl tubing
3/4″ barb	❌ Wrong size	Use 73979 (230V, 3/4″ barb) or LHB07100138 instead
3/4″ MPT (threaded)	❌ Wrong type	Use 73999 (230V, 3/4″ MPT) instead
1-1/2″ MBT threaded	❌ Wrong size	Different connection type entirely

⚠️ Upgrading from 3/4″ Barb to 1″ Barb (73979 → 74079): If replacing a 73979 (230V, 3/4″ barb) with this 74079 (230V, 1″ barb), you must purchase barb adapters (42-0013 × 2 qty) and coupling (64-0006) for proper plumbing fit.

Installation Notes

⚠️ Verify Voltage FIRST: This pump operates on 230V ONLY. Check the label on your existing pump. For 115V systems, use the 74069 (115V, 1″ barb).

⚠️ Verify Connection Size: This pump has 1″ barb connections. If your current pump uses 3/4″ barb, choose the 73979 (230V, 3/4″ barb) instead — or purchase adapters.

⚠️ Bracket Orientation: The integrated bracket mounts at 4 different discharge angles. Rotate to align with your existing plumbing before securing.

⚠️ First Startup: Soft start (approximately 3 seconds). The impeller may rotate slowly at first until water penetrates the bearings — this is normal.

⚠️ Dry Run Protection: If pump detects no water, it shuts down and retries automatically. Repeated cycling indicates air lock or plumbing obstruction.

⚠️ Motor Orientation: Horizontal or vertical with motor end DOWN only. Never mount motor end up.

⚠️ Maximum Water Temperature: 140°F (60°C). Do not exceed.

⚠️ GFCI Protection Required: All spa installations require GFCI protection per the NEC.

⚠️ Bonding & Grounding Required: Per NEC requirements.

⚙️ Maintenance Guide

Routine Maintenance

Task	Frequency	Notes
Check for water flow	Monthly	Verify circulation is active
Inspect barb connections	Monthly	Check for leaks at hose clamp connections
Listen for unusual noise	Monthly	Should be nearly silent (less than 40 dB)
Inspect cord and connections	Quarterly	Check terminated ends and cord condition
Check mounting bracket	Quarterly	Ensure pump is secure
Verify GFCI operation	Monthly	Press test button to check

Warning Signs — Replace Pump If:

• Pump fails to start or hums without rotation
• Unusual noise (clicking, grinding, buzzing)
• No water circulation despite pump running
• Motor trips breaker or GFCI repeatedly
• Pump vibrating excessively
• Dry run protection cycling repeatedly (if plumbing is clear, pump may need replacement)
• Error codes on spa controller related to circulation (FL1, FLO, etc.)

Sealless Design Advantage

The Laing E10’s patented sealless, shaftless design means there is no mechanical shaft seal — the most common failure point in traditional circulation pumps. The magnetically driven impeller eliminates this leak path entirely. If water appears at this pump, check hose clamp connections and barb fittings first — it is not a seal leak.
